Educated by a Carpenter.

Anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened; one of the reasons why it needs no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself. —C. S. Lewis.

This author needs no introduction, one of the most renowned Christians sums it up best, Christianity is an education itself. Here, I believe a lot of people stumble because they don’t think of Christianity as an education as well as a relationship, just a Religion. I to thought these very same things, but of course that was when i was doing things they way the world does them. I was and still can be a fool, if I don’t hand the reigns over to Christ, and let Him teach me.

When i first sobered up everything I had learned about living life had to thrown out the window. Everything I new, was dead wrong. This bit of information scared me just for the fact i had to learn something knew and most importantly, I was wrong, and i didn’t like being wrong. But who was i to question anything seeing how if i didn’t sober up, I was looking at a long time in the prison system, which, was not very appealing. So I set on this journey to learn from the master Himself, and after years of unprecedented proof , Christ is the best teacher.

It all starts with our thought process. Dr. Silkworth, one of the leading researchers and doctor to alcoholics in the early 1900’s put it this way: “Without a complete psychic change, the same man will drink again”. And this is so true, i believe about life as well. We need to overhaul our thinking, by this i mean asking God to put right people in our life to kick that “stinking thinking”. Because if we hang out with the same people who think the way we did, then we will inevitably continue to do the same things. Thats why I had to surround myself with some very awesome Christians to help with the thought process. Of course, spending many hours in the Bible has worked better than anything.

I have told a lot of people over the years that the biggest thing to staying sober is stop hanging with your friends that spend all day drinking. Most of the time they look at me crazy, all the while to come back two weeks later and wonder why they got drunk! Jesus gives us a different perspective on who are true friends are, and I’ll be the first to tell you there not the ones sitting on a bar stool. My true friends today teach me everyday how to be Christian and how to love Christ with everything I have. These are the people I love being around, not because their rich, or pretty, or the cool kids, but because they teach me how to be a Christian Man in a world full of God-haters and morally unsound people. Those are the people I used to hang out with, and they only brought me pain and misery.

Today, I am going to college, by the grace of God, and don’t get me wrong there are some great teachers and professors. The professors i have had have been very good and i have learned a ton. But there has been no greater teacher than Christ Himself. Christ has taught me how to love and forgive. He has taught me how to be a man and to have respect for woman. He’s also shown me that He is what life is all about.

So let me ask you my friend, who is your teacher today?

SPRING TIME BLUES!

Though I have been living in Michigan my whole life, I hate the winter time. I’m glad January is over and that means one thing, only a month and a half till spring and warm weather. This picture was taken in late spring a couple years ago outside my balcony. This is why I love spring. Love, love, love it! Spring is a time when new plant life begins and the salt on the car is polished away. Spring means shorts and flip flops, windows down and cruising until late at night. Its love like crazy and steaks on the grill. Oh how I miss the spring.

These winter months drive me crazy, though, fortunately this year our winter has not been that bad, but none the less they drag on. If anyone lives in the Midwest will know what I am talking about. The winter sometimes drags on until April with snow the first week and rain and coldness to the bones until may. I don’t pretend to enjoy this time because I am a warm weather type of guy. The snow and cold I could live without. No walks in the park, no ducks playing, no green grass or the ice cream man. Please oh spring hurry up!

The spring really brings me to great and utter happiness for one, just watching the pure wonder of Gods artistic side really comes to life in the spring. Not saying that He’s not artistic in the winter, because He is, but I believe the spring is where we witness the full impact of Gods creative design. Look at the trees giving life to green leaves, and that blade of grass everyone gets excited about cutting, is truly the work of the Master craftsmen Himself. Look at the flowers as they start to bloom and the beautiful colors they provide and the night sky with all its stars and galaxies. Mornings with the dew on the grass and the birds arriving back for another season.

The river has a different spark about it in the early spring as fisherman begin to pursue the one that got away and spring training produces the next all-American. The earth worm as he comes out of hibernation just to be picked up by a hungry bird fresh in from a 1,000 mile trip and the still of the day when that peace that’s beyond all understanding leads you in the way. The farmers starting their crops and flannels give way to tank tops and bikinis. The joy of cool air brushing against you as you stroll in the park with your lover, never taking your eyes of off her. Skipping rocks in the mud puddles and back woods bonfires.

These are the joys of spring that I long for all year long. Especially the walks in the early morning to spend some time with the Creator of all this wonder. So, today, forget about winter, I have my sights set on spring and all the adventures that come along. This is the season that dreams are made of and my dream is to take a deep breath and take it all in, before once again, its spring no more.

If any of you have read my blog in the last 24 hours, you will have noticed I changed the theme. Actually, I’ve changed it three or four times since I have been writing because I like change. And besides, the new theme reminds me of spring and oh how so close we are getting to warm weather. Now some of my readers in other areas of the world may not have a change in weather like we do in Michigan, I’ve heard Australia is quite nice (That’s for Anne Mum) as I like to call her. The new theme is very joyful and bright which reminds me to be the same.

Also, the change of season also brings me to complacency, or in slang, in a rut. Webster’s defines complacency as being satisfied with how things are and not wanting to try and make them better. Proverbs 1:32 says for the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. I believe both to be one in the same. Think about it, being satisfied can cause you to slip into waywardness, which ultimately brings destruction. True story. How many people do you know that said they were satisfied with life, and the next day there in a tailspin with no breaks? I have witnessed it many times not only in other people, but my own life as well.

I’ve been stuck in a rut many times and honestly, it sucks! You don’t know what’s going on, you pray, but the words feel like there just bouncing of the walls. You seem to be able to mess the simplest things up, or the biggest. Complacency, I do not believe, happens overnight. It’s pre-meditated in our sub-conscious that when “I get through this”, everything will be OK. This is a danger zone for me because that says “hey, you made it, take it easy for a while”, then I’m back in the same boat I was before. Sound familiar? Today I cannot afford to be complacent because as everyone know, “idle time is the devils playground”, and dancing with the devil just isn’t fun to me anymore.

Now that January is almost over and February is almost here, I have decided to keep growing spiritually and no matter what, continue to learn. Humans are created in the image of a loving God, and we need to keep growing in the likeness of Him, day by day. If we don’t, then what is it all for? I want to keep growing and becoming everything that God wants me to be to glorify Him. Because I would rather live life believing in God, and get to heaven, and find out there isn’t one, than to live this life like there isn’t a God, and get to heaven and find out He is real.

Max and Jesus.

Looking at this picture reminds me of my two loves; Jesus and Max. Unfortunately Oreo didn’t make it into this picture partly because he has gained a few pounds and can’t get his fat but on the table like Max can.

Looking at this picture raises a question I have often pondered: “are your pets Christian?” I know it’s late at night, at least here in Michigan it’s almost 11:30 and I really need to be getting ready for bed, but I wanted to pose this question for my readers out there late at night. In my opinion I feel that Max and Oreo are Christians, though I don’t know for sure if they said the sinner’s prayer in cat language or not. I do have some reasons for my madness this late at night so just bear with me.

When I pray at night time I have often found both cats either on my bed or on the floor when I’m done. They know, I believe, what I’m doing because they always seem to understand what I’m doing. I really can’t explain it but watching them sometimes is really awesome. Like when I’m playing Christian music on the radio, they have a tendency to get closer to the radio and I thought I had seen Oreo break out into a dance routine in the kitchen one morning. Max is fond of the News Boys because when I play one of their songs his tail starts to swing.

I know this all sounds a bit crazy, but is it? Animals are mentioned all over scripture, from Noah’s ark to Jesus riding in on a Donkey. Animals are one of Gods amazing creation as well, so would it be so hard to conceive that they too, are Christian? Just a little something I had been thinking about and would love some feedback on this one.

Obedient.

Sometime, a long time ago, I lost my way. I can’t remember really when it happened all I can say is I became disobedient to any authority in my life. I believe it was probably when my father passed away well over 20 years ago. After he passed, I really didn’t have much to live for. I was angry, hurt, sad, practically every human emotion all rolled up into one, then add booze. Not the best combination nor the best life, but I realize today there are proper and improper ways to deal with the pain and hurt of losing someone.

When i sobered up and came to the Lord, He took over, and He helped me through a lot of pain. But one thing I still struggle with is obedience to His word. Now I’m not say that it happens all the time, but most of the time I miss the boat completely. My first summer sober i was working landscaping and on route to a job site one morning I came across a church sign that I still hold in my heart to this day, it read: “When God speaks, you better listen”. Now seeing words like this in the very early morning will wake any man, no coffee needed!

Those six words I hang on to on a daily basis, because you never know when God is speaking to you. And we He does, we need to listen as I have found out because there’s usually a lesson of sorts to be learned. It may be to hold the door open for someone at the grocery store, or a kind word to the neighbor, or simply spending time with family. One thing I have learned is God cares about the small stuff in our life just as much as the big stuff. To often we keep God in a box, only to use Him when times are tough.  I know this can be the case with me sometimes, then i remember what a friend of mine told me a long time ago, “We serve a Big God”.

So today, between work and school I have to remember that there is no problem to big or to small for Him. And I have to be obedient to what He says no matter what. But, to go along with obedience, we have to ask Him for the strength to be willing to do what He wants us to do, just for the fact that a lot of things He asks us to do seems a little crazy. Human strength alone cannot handle what God wants us to do, we need God strength to carry out any job He asks of us.

So today I throw in the towel, I surrender all to Him, and may He be glorified in all I do. How about You?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.-Proverbs 3:5-6

Escapades of a Drunk.

This post is dedicated to some funny and down right hysterical stories from the days of chasing the moonlight and loving woman. Now one might ask "how are these stories funny?’ Well, when we sober up and start doing some reflecting on our past existence and start meeting other people that share the same stories that we do, we realize the insanity of our behavior and come to grips that it happened, and all you can do is laugh.

I have been in many meetings over the years listening to alcoholics share some pretty horrendous events from their lives, only to follow up with a room full of laughter. Now, when I first sober up I saw nothing funny about anything I did. But as the years has went by, I too have had some adventures that seem like their right out of a movie.   So I have decided to dedicate a category to the funny things that happened when I was drinking. Once a week I will write a new post to share, that even though life then was a living hell, their were some funny and down right knee slapping events that occurred.

242

Even though I wasn’t a martini drinker, (I thought a guy should drink beer or whiskey, that other stuff were for woman) when their was nothing else left, I may have had a couple just to keep the buzz going. If it wasn’t beer or whiskey, heck tequila did the trick on most nights, I wasn’t drinking. On one particular night I went out with some friends that were trying to “hook me up” with a friend of there’s. My only concern for the evening was getting drunk and having sex, period. Seeing how I had the next couple days of off work, I was going all out that night.(plus it was payday!) So the evening was set and I met my friends in a local eatery for dinner and drinks. The girl that I was supposed to meet had to cancel because of family problems. (as I found out later, the girl I was to wine and dine that evening was married, and her family problem was her husband found out about all her other affairs she had had in the past, and to say the least, he wasn’t to happy with her actions and filed for a divorce, the big problem; he was very wealthy and she basically did nothing except spend his money and sleep around)

I wasn’t upset by this because frankly, I didn’t mess around with married woman. That was one rule I had, married woman were of limits. So my friends and I decided to just enjoy the evening and boy did we, before I knew it I was three sheets to the wind and the bartender was calling last call. By this time my friends had left and I was making my moves on another young lady at the bar. But in the end I knew it was time to go home. Not having much sense when I was young, I usually drove home after the bar(how stupid, thank God I didn’t hurt anyone!). So, crooked eyed, I get in the car and head for home. Right before my house was a gas station and I had to stop because I was out of cigarettes and any drunk that smokes, waking up with a hang over without a cigarette was bad news.

As I pulled in I seen the flashing lights behind me and I knew were I was going to spend the next couple of days. As I’m sitting there I realized I was to drunk to move let alone drive, and the cop comes up and knocks on the window. “Sir, I noticed you wee swerving across the yellow line, could you get out of the car?” My response and please don’t ever say this to a cop! “Officer, I’m to drunk to get out, why don’t you get in the passenger seat and take a load off.” Yea, not the best thing to say at 4 o clock in the morning to a cop that has been working his but off all night. And the only reason I remember what I said is because he wrote it down in his files as one of the funniest things ever said to a cop by a drunk!

So, needless to say I spent the next 72 hours in the drunk tank and thanks to my “comment” the whole station was laughing about it the next morning! Now I’m not saying that I’m proud of this by no means, all I am saying that when I look back, it was as you would say “A real knee slapper”! Today I do still do dumb things that make me wonder sometimes if I hadn’t fried all of my brain cells when I was drinking, but the fact is I can laugh about these things now because that was the life of another person. The old Scott. Today I am very grateful to God for pulling me out of that mess I lived in. But the one one thing I have learned is you have to laugh at yourself sometimes to make any sense of things today, and laughter is good for the soul.

Offensive?

What about Jesus? Oh, touchy subject huh? Ever think of Him that way? Other than being the one who brought me out of a straight living hell, and being the one I run to day and night for comfort, protection, wisdom, and love, I think of Jesus as the greatest phenomenon known to humanity. Why? Because after two thousand years His name is above all names and His name is the only name to send chills down the backs of men. The grave couldn’t hold Him that’s for sure. He was mocked, flogged, beaten and tortured all because He is the greatest love known to humanity.

He turned water into wine and walked on water, do you know anyone else that can do these things? Nope. He gave hope to a hopeless generation and loved the unlovely. His words heeled the sick and drove out demons. In three years this God Man named Jesus Christ caused more commotion and stirred the pot the pharisee’s and Sadducee call religion, that they tried to kill Him. No other man in history gave so much, only to receive so little, or did He? God put Him at the right hand and declared Him King of Kings, thats alot right?

But see, people don’t think of Him this way. No, their trying to get Him banned and kicked out like a criminal. Well, standing up for Jesus is criminal in some countries. Yet, when He said His way is the Only way, and Christians follow Him and are obedient to Him, people get offended. But pornography and homosexuality is O.K.? Hitting your wife, cheating on her, is OK, but don’t dare pray in public because its offensive?

Heck, you cannot even raise your son to be a son or your daughter to be a daughter now a days without upsetting the trans-gender movement. “Oh just let them be whatever they want to be”, Really? We get in trouble for disciplining our kids but its OK to show our children how to scam the welfare system and at the same time praise Jesus for the help. Really?  Just the other day I watched a lady spend 250 dollars in food stamps, only to drive off in a brand new Cadillac!

I know it seems like I’m ranting and raving, maybe I am or maybe I just want everyone to know the good news of Jesus Christ. He’s not going to hurt you, nor make fun of you just because you don’t have a last name that tops the town.  He’s not going to hurl insults at you because you drive a car that’s not fancy no He will let you ride in the best seat in town, in the back, while He drives. To the mother that had an abortion last night, He doesn’t condemn you,  He has mercy on you. To the drunkard or druggy just waking up from another battle, His recovery will make you whole. And to anyone that has lost their way, and finds life about as hopeless as the Cubs winning the World Series, Jesus gives you Hope.

The greatest Phenomenon to walk the planet, Jesus Christ, breathed the breath of life into me, will you let Him do the same?
